This is a simple book with a powerful message! I've been in the financial industry for 7 years and have always thought of my finances as being quite organized. After reading this book, they are even more in order. I love the idea of buckets of money and have set up several of my own...including a bucket of "Bucket List" money to ensure my family gets to do the things we've always wanted!
Financial planning is much like fire insurance, you just can't imagine that you are going to need it. This book pushes you to a place you would really rather not go to now. However, funding your future now is exactly the right time. Among others, I witnessed a gentleman go into the recession with $20+ million cash and come out with zero. This was a quick, fun and thought provoking read aimed at forcing you to proactively plan for "making your financial future happen," versus standing on the sidelines and "letting your future happen." Phil empathizes that most individuals are consumed with their "reactive day-to-day living" thinking there is always plenty of time to plan your financial future. That said, Phil firmly and subtly makes the point that "you can't play victim" to your financial future. As with everything in life, there are circumstances/events outside your control (e.g., recessions, housing bubbles, market changes, world conflicts, etc). Not being prepared proactively financially is not an excuse or acceptable strategy. At the end of each key learning chapter, Phil provides a set of actionable steps to move individuals forward with an achievable plan/strategy to achieve and attain one's individual bigger financial future. Phil also discusses balance and "giving back." Phil challenges the reader to more "out of the box" thinking around what each of as individuals want from our future and offers suggestions and actions to MAKE our future OUR proactively planned reality.
I'm getting up there in age and started thinking more about my retirement. This book gave me some new ideas, new challenges and was very easy to follow. I don't have a lot of income to work with, but I feel I can definitely put together a better plan now and not worry so much about my golden years!
Short, to the point, refreshingly simple and honest. I made some immediate adjustments to my attitude about money and my ability to retire when I want.
